Border Oak Porches

The renowned Border Oak porch was first created for Ben and Merry's 21st Century Cottage which featured on Channel 4's Grand Designs in 2001

Designed by Merry's father, John Greene, our original porch design was inspired by the lychgate of the church where the (then!) young couple had married. With its trademark curved tiebeam, bullnosed wallplates and mullioned side pieces it proved so popular (across the world!) that we decided it would work perfectly as a Self Assembly Kit - and so the Border Oak Porch was born.

Forming the perfect entrance to almost any house, it provides shelter as well as architectural interest. There are now a wide range of additional porch kits available - each bearing the same Border Oak trademark of craftsmanship and quality.

All of our porches are handmade in our Herefordshire workshops. They are much imitated but, in our humble opinion, no one else ever gets it quite right.

The Border Oak Porch encapsulates everything that Border Oak stand for.

Our design respects vernacular proportions with every detail considered and beautifully articulated. The tie beam has a gentle curve, the front posts are flared, the wallplates are "bullnosed", each side has diamond mullions fully morticed into the frame and the oak rafters are each given a traditional arched foot. There are no shortcuts - the oak we use is the finest restoration grade and each porch is made by hand. The dimensions of each beam have been scrutinised to ensure they are neither too bulky, nor too flimsy.

We have recently extended our range of porches to incorporate different styles and sizes for any situation - from a giant entry porch to a simple canopy - but the design quality, attention to detail, standard of materials and level of craftsmanship is always maintained.

We provide our porches as Self Assembly Kits complete with drawings and instructions  - and aim to deliver within 10-12 weeks, although we can advise you of specific timescales at the time of order.

We try to hold some designs in stock, so please contact us for more information.
